Introduction
The attendees will strengthen the design considerations and operational aspects of directional, horizontal drilling. This course will increase the understanding of the operations carried out by directional drillers and how directional and horizontals wells are planned and optimized. The basic applications and techniques for multilateral wells are also covered in the course
Objective
Upon the successful completion of this online training course, the participant(s) will be able to:
- Be aware with the whole drilling operations briefly & all used related services in a drilling well.
- Follow up all directional & horizontal drilling operations starting from well planning till end of the well.
- Discuss the directional & horizontal drilling basics in oil & gas industries.
- Be aware with directional & horizontal drilling problems & preventive ways to have the best well smooth profile.
- Being Capable to follow up the directional & horizontal drilling operations as a drilling engineer / night well site supervisor / well site supervisor @ rig site practically combined with a demo on the COMPASS Software.
- Apply & monitoring the plan vs actual surveys & request the mostly right correction & modifications on time.
- Conduct torque & drag calculations combined with all other factors affecting both of them.
- Work on equipment DH failures & take the right decision on the right time (ARAMCO Experiences included).
- Being able to have the best options & well plan to fulfil the company objective from exploration POV.
- Be aware with all (PDC & Rock) Bits properties, advantages, disadvantages, main differences …
- Be aware with all hydraulics calculations (FR, HSI, AV …) to have the best hole cleaning & ROP in all well trajectories.
- Be aware with the successful directional drilling practices by applying the right optimum drilling parameters while drilling different hole sizes in a different formation such as sand, abrasive sand, dolomitic L.ST., Shale, Anhydrite …
- Be aware all DHT’s (Down Hole Tools: Jars, Shock Sub, RR, S.STB ….) functions, positions in both (Vertical & Directional) BHA’s, failures analysis … in addition to all Directional & Horizontal Drilling Tools (MTR, MWD, LWD, RSS …).
- Be aware with the design & preparing of the DRLG String Program (technically & commercially) while drilling the whole well sections specially the problematic & spick formations.
- Be aware with how to prevent the complications, low ROP, DS failures, long OH exposure time, lost nozzles, lost cones, wash out, twist off, cutter damage, over torque
- Be aware with all jar types, placement in different BHA’s, different related problems & failures
- Be aware with all OH & CH Side Tracks, Whip Stock BHA Design, and Milling & Smoothing CSG Window Procedures.
- Be aware with all Neutral Point, WOB & WBJ Calculations & Constrains as well as all Neutral Point Calculations.
Be aware with all Multilateral Well Design, Programs, Plans, Calculations, Problems, Operations, Limitations

Methodology
A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information and knowledge transfer. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions, and motivate everybody find the right answers. You will also be encouraged to raise your own questions and to share in the development of the right answers using your own analysis and experiences. Tests of multiple-choice type will be made available on daily basis to examine the effectiveness of delivering the course.
All presentations are made in excellent colourful power point. Very useful Course Materials will be given.
